History of Special Mine Services, Inc.
In 1983, Special Mine Services, Inc. was founded by Les Huntsman and George Kee. Special Mine Services initially distributed and repaired electrical cable to the coal mining industry in the tri-state regions of Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky. Special Mine Services quickly expanded its customer base and became a distributor of ancillary products associated with heavy industrial and mining industries.
In the late 1980’s, Special Mine Services began to diversify. Our first venture was the manufacturing and distribution of electrical connectors. Since then, we have developed a complete line of molded neoprene connectors for the mining, tunneling, and entertainment industries that are interchangeable with other major manufactured connectors.
In 2004, Special Mine Services became an ESOP. We are currently 100% employee owned and continue to grow our business thanks to our dedicated and hardworking employees.
In 2013, Special Mine Services expanded our internal machine shop needed to manufacture our quality connectors. Coupled with this expansion, we began using our machining expertise and experience to offer machining services to outside customers.
In 2017, Special Mine Services began offering fabrication and welding services. In 2018, we were pleased to announce the expansion of our fabrication and welding services with the completion of our new 16,000 square foot building.
